Description of Riomaggiore

Following the scenic route that starts from La Spezia you will come to ther first of the Five Lands (5 terre) Riomaggiore.

In the centre of this quaint picturesque village with its colourful houses painted in typical Ligurian colours of yellow and pink, roof tops of slate, presents itself in definite contrast with the natural green of nature and the wild green that sets itself between the delighful houses.

The village takes its name from Rivus Major the stream that runs under the main street.

Rising from this splendid sea one of the most famous attractions is the "Via dell'Amore"(street of love) departing from Riomaggiore it links up to Manarola the second village of the five Lands.

There are numerous stories that are told on this walk and it is said that many poets and artists have been spellbound by this road cut of the mountain side and found many inspirations for their compositions.
